Derek Rawls currently serves as the elementary computer teacher as well as the elementary specials team leader and has been a school mentor for new teachers beginning in 2016. His primary responsibilities include instructing all kindergarten through 5th grade students in all things computing, including keyboarding, Google applications (word processing, spreadsheets, and slideshows), software and hardware fundamentals, online safety, and computer coding. He brings with him previous tech knowledge from previous jobs in the banking and finance fields as well as a passion for kids. Derek also owned a business for the 5 years prior to becoming a teacher and this helps him bring some real life experiences for the students to help equip them for the next grade level and beyond. His main passion is to make all students feel included, safe, and unafraid to make mistakes.
He is happily married for 18 years and has 3 wonderful children that all go with him to school each and every day.
Education: BA in History from University of Texas Arlington Masters in Library Science (MLS) University of North Texas
Carol Wayne has been the full time librarian at LAE since 2008. She started as Library Consultant in 2007. Mrs. Wayne previously worked as Adult Services Librarian at Nicholson Memorial Library in Garland, and at Nicholas Sims Library in Waxahachie. She volunteered at school and the public libraries in DeSoto as well as working in a bookstore. As you can see, most of her working life involves books. The best part of her job is watching her students grow as readers and making books a part of their lives.
Mrs. Wayne and her husband, Richard, have been married 38 years and have 3 grown sons and one adorable grandson. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading and gardening and traveling in the Mountain West!! The Wayne's are also involved with Tri-Cities Animal Shelter and helping feral cats.

Dathan Boone currently serves as the K-5 music teacher. His primary responsibilities include teaching music to all K-5 students, preparing for performances and shows, and teaching after school modern band. He brings experience in teaching, instrument repair, and symphony performance. Prior to joining the LAE staff in 2018 as a music teacher, Mr. Boone taught for 4 years in Dallas ISD and 2 years in Florida.
In additional to teaching, Mr. Boone plays with the New Texas Symphony Orchestra. In his free time he enjoys listening to live bands, playing video games, and riding his motorcycle.

Mr. Sanchez has served as LAE's K-5 physical educator since 2017. His primary responsibilities include educating students on fitness, practicing exercise activities, and constructing age-appropriate lesson plans. Prior to joining the LAE staff in 2016, as a physical medicine technician, Mr. Sanchez assisted physical therapists with their patients at Methodist Charlton Hospital. Mr. Sanchez likes to coach soccer, play sports, and travel.
